Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is an opportunity to speak privately and confidentially with a therapist about personal issues and to facilitate personal growth. It is a process through which clients work one-on-one with a trained therapist in a safe and caring environment to explore their feelings, beliefs, or behaviors. Therapist and client work together to reach mutually agreed upon goals to create lasting change and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

People seek therapy for a wide variety of reasons, from coping with major life challenges, loss, relationship difficulties, or childhood trauma, to dealing with depression or anxiety, to simply desiring personal growth and greater self-knowledge. Therapy can be used to address problems as well as life dreams, existential concerns, fears, and transitions. Therapy may help to increase positive feelings such as joy, compassion, peace, self-esteem, and a sense of well being.

Therapy sessions are typically 50-minutes in length, once or more per week. To get started, call a therapist to schedule an initial appointment. This first appointment provides an opportunity for you to begin to build rapport with the therapist and provide him/her with some background about yourself and the reasons you are seeking counseling. In addition, the therapist will be able to answer specific questions about cost, length of treatment and possible results. These questions are best directed to the therapist that you choose to work with.

Technology is changing our world, and the way technology is shaping the work of counseling psychology is no different. Some therapists and clients find that by using video conferencing they can efficiently and effectively communicate in a way that allows the therapeutic work to be done. This can be a way to avoid commuting to a therapist’s office for each appointment and allow for private meetings held in the comfort of your own home or office. The convenience of video conferencing may be worth exploring with the therapist.
